ATENEO HOLDS 6th PAZ MARQUEZ BENITEZ
MEMORIAL LECTURE
Program of Activities
On Saturday, 18 November 2000, the Ateneo Library of Women's Writings (ALIWW) and the Ateneo Center for English Language Teaching (ACELT) will jointly sponsor the 6th Paz Marquez Benitez Memorial Lecture. The lecture will be held in the Social Science Building Audio-Visual Room at the Ateneo de Manila University, Loyola Heights, Quezon City. Registration begins at 8:30. The program is expected to end at 12:00.
The annual lectures focus on a specific Filipino woman writer. This year, it is Lina Espina Moore, an outstanding writer in Cebu in English and Cebuano. The event also marks the formal of Austregelina: A story of Lina Espina Moore's Life and Selected Works, written and edited by Edna Z. Manlapaz, Anvil Publishing, 2000. The book will be available for sale before and after the program at a special discounted rate of P250.00.
Titled "Featuring the Fiction of Lina Espina Moore: Strategies for Teaching Three Stories," the morning's program includes an introductory lecture by Thelma Arambulo of the Department of English at UP Diliman and a panel presentation by faculty members of the Department of English at Ateneo de Manila University. They will offer various ways of teaching three classic short stories from Lina Espina Moore's canon: (a) "Sam-it and the Loom" - set in Baguio, a story of a young Igorot girl's complex relationship with her American/Christian employer; (b) "The Silent Hills" - a story of a confrontation between a Filipina and the Japanese widow of a soldier killed during the pacific war; and (c) "Mansion" - a story of a public school teacher who, forced by her ambitious and materialistic husband to give up teaching , loses her identity.
There is a need to introduce into the literature classrooms of the Philippines more stories that represent the Filipino woman's perspective on national life and cultural differences among people. This lecture discussion is a response to this need. Registration fee is P100.00 inclusive of snacks, materials, and certificate. Number of participants is limited to 100 only.
