PELT (Philippines English Language Teaching) Project
In 1995, ACELT took on the four-year British Government-sponsored Philippines English Language Teaching (PELT) Project for public secondary schools. The project also received support from FUSE (Foundation for Upgrading the Standards of Education) and Metrobank Foundation. The PELT Project is the major influence of ACELT's PELT Model Teacher and Trainer Training Programs.
The program consists of two main components: teacher training and the School-Based Follow-up Development Activity (SFDA).
The teacher training seminar builds on the existing SEDP (Secondary Educational Development Program) used in all public secondary schools. It is trainee-centered, encouraging participants to reflect critically on their current teaching methods and attempt to find their own solutions to problems. The training package is delivered annually to all public schools.
The SFDA is designed to bridge the gap between the teachers' learning experience in the seminar and the teaching situations they must return to in their respective schools. The aim is not to make the seminar the end in itself but a stimulus for a longer process of school-based learning by the trainees. The result is more empowered teachers who are also independent learners with greater confidence and competence in facing and solving teaching-learning problems.
Management of the PELT Project was turned over by the British Government to the DECS in January 1999. PELT Teacher Training Seminars continue to be scheduled and delivered yearly in the different regions.
